Common Questions

What materials do you use to make this stuff?

For resin models, I use a ABS-Like Photopolymer Resin has better toughness, has some flex and stretch, is less-brittle, and has excellent abrasion resistance compared to standard 3D Printer Resin.

After going through tons of vendors, I have settled on a basic black 1.75 PLA filament that has low stringing, lower melting temperature and ease of use, low warp and shrinkage, and takes both basic and filler primers well.

What paints, tools, glue, etc should I use?

To be honest, what ever paints and primers you use for your plastic stuff work great for resin/pla models. A standard CA glue like Bob Smith or Gorilla is all you need to merge your pieces as well. Lastly, resin models will sometimes have marks where supports were attached. Some good sanding sticks/paper or diamond files will do the trick but would recommend as mask as it can generate a lot of dust.

I heard you have to smooth FDM/PLA prints first, how do you do that?

That is totally optional, but I try my best to make sure we get smooth layers every time. You can smooth PLA models to near “glass-smooth” finish, I have done it but it takes a lot of sanding and some additional materials. Here is a link to a great video that walks though the process.

Do I need to wash/prep resin models?

All models are triple washed starting with concentrated simple green to get pooled resin out or hallowed areas, then two rounds of 99.9% isopropyl alcohol. They are left to dry for 1 hour before hit with a heat gun to help gently remove supports. Lastly they are then cured using a UV chamber to solidify and make safe to touch without gloves.
